KELLY ZELEN
Solo Show: Artexpo New York, March 22-25th
NEW YORK (March 20, 2012) —- Boston fine artist, Kelly Zelen, will be a featured solo artist at the 33rd Artexpo New York 2012. Ms. Zelen will exhibit her sculptures as part of The Solo Pavilion for new and emerging artists.
Ms. Zelen, a graduate of New England School of Art & Design at Suffolk University, has shown her work at galleries in Boston, Chicago, New York and Washington, DC. In September 2011, she was a Featured Artist at the Affordable Art Fair in New York City as part of the Lilybranch Fine Art collection and has booked a show with the New Art Center in NYC for 2013.
The human form has always intrigued Ms. Zelen, who says she draws inspiration from the ordinary; specifically the unconscious betrayal our reactive selves emit. “I find it interesting how we think we have our emotions under control but how we unconsciously let them leak out, a furrow in the brow, crease in the forehead. We have no control over how our bodies advertise our thoughts,” says Ms. Zelen. She says her pieces symbolize this raw emotion, after the flesh has been stripped away.
To further the metaphor, Ms. Zelen’s use of materials (steel wool and wire) counteracts the ‘gentleness’ of the human form that she captures in sculpture. “I like the contradiction of the steel wool: supple and rough,” says Ms. Zelen who incorporates ultrafine, stainless steel, and copper wools into her pieces which sometimes stretch to seven feet in height.
Artexpo New York 2012 is an international trade show connecting qualified buyers and collectors on a global platform. The 33rd annual show, located in Pier 92 on the Hudson River in Manhattan, will run for five days (March 22-25) and is marketed as one of the largest global gatherings of qualified trade buyers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Kelly O’Keefe Wins Best Makeup Artist, 2012 for Boston, Cape & Islands, and Opens New Studio
—- O’Keefe Wins Second Award from National Media Company & Opens Tryst
BOSTON (January 23, 2012) — Kelly A. O’Keefe, Boston makeup artist and Founder/Creative Director of BLUSH, was awarded ‘Best Makeup Artist, Wedding 2012’ by The Knot (NYSE:XOXO). The Knot, an online wedding planning resource, services the billion dollar wedding industry (1.8 millions registered users) and is part of XO Group, Inc., formerly The Knot Inc., which owns a family of media brands, including: The Wedding Channel, The Nest, The Bump, The Knot, ijie (the Knot’s sister site in China – launched in 2010).
As a winner, Ms. O’Keefe will be featured on TheKnot.com’s Best of Weddings winner’s page which receives over 100 million page views per month. 2012 marks the second consecutive year Blush was nominated by editors, stylists, photographers and brides as Best Makeup Artist for the Boston, Cape & Islands and won, receiving the highest 5 star rating in all categories.
Next month, Ms. O’Keefe will open TRYST, a makeup studio and styling boutique, in downtown Hingham. ”It has always been a dream of mine to open my own studio, so when this space became available, I jumped at the chance,” said Ms. O’Keefe.
“2011 was a banner year for us,” said Ms. O’Keefe. “We did 47 weddings, added two new makeup artists, and our work was featured in the Knot, Well Wed, the beauty issue of South Shore Living Magazine, and we were featured on various websites and blogs, it was a whirlwind.” Ms. O’Keefe said she is excited for 2012, and has many new endeavors planned. “It’s not even February and we’ve already booked close to 30 weddings! And once Tryst is open, we will be doing more in-store styling and shoots,” says Ms. O’Keefe who plans to open her studio in late February.
In terms of fashion, Ms. O’Keefe is witnessing an uptick in avante garde and chic. “I am seeing a lot of cat-eye and red lip, brides are becoming more adventurous and risk-taking. I think we’ll see a real return to glamour – a slight shift away from DIY and back to couture and elegance – Prince William and Kate’s fairy tale wedding was huge for our industry, so we’ll see iterations of the fairy tale in the upcoming wedding season. In terms of dresses, it is so refreshing to see more fashion-forward pieces, more couture, looks that were not seen much before. One season, I think I saw the exact dress on 3 different brides. That wouldn’t happen now,” said O’Keefe. “There are still plenty of ethereal-boho-chic girls out there and classic New England girls in J.Crew with their boys in Nantucket Reds and Sperry’s, we love them all!”

By now, we’ve all heard about SOPA (booooooooo!). Shelby.tv is joining sites such as Wikipedia and Reddit to protest this dangerous bill, and will go dark tomorrow (January 18th) to show just how sad the web would look under SOPA. (And a world without Shelby is a sad, sad world.)
If SOPA passes,…
